First half of today’s sermon notes is courtesy of Alphonse’s notes as I was late. Will later replace with my notes after I hear the audio recording of the sermon which I will purchase next Sunday :) Sorry.
- Opening of the book of Luke: Zechariah (God remembers) & Elizabeth (His promises) visited John (grace)
- The worst sin is self-righteousness. Man was trying to do what we already are in Christ.
Job 1:5
- Job wasn’t resting in the finished work, but he was so sin-conscious, he became self-righteous and fearful.
- Job was fearful of condemnation. He was offering sacrifice out of fear instead of out of His love and grace for us.
- God has found a ransom to die for our sins and paid for our redemption. He is not pitiful, merciful in making us righteous. He was righteous in making us righteous.
- Stand before God as our justifier not our judge. Be the judge and we cannot be saved. God justifies us and we cannot be lost.
- When we feel condemned, somehow we were hankering for self-righteousness.
Numbers 5:1-3
- God put this passage to let it be the end of ourselves.
- Forget self, take God’s righteousness. We measure sin based on the degrees of public acceptance, and how dead we are. To God, he only saves as no matter how we are still sinners.
- God cleansed the leper, staunched the woman’s discharge & raised the dead.
Galatians 5:4
- Whenever grace comes, it changes the situation. If you expose sin to grace, grace swallows up sin.
- Only one group of people cannot receive His grace and healing is the Pharisees (self-righteousness). He cannot save those who are fallen from grace as they are justified by the law.
- The devil reminds us how much it is never enough when we do good and condemns us when we sin and do wrong.
- Adam & Eve covered themselves with fig leaves (bloodless sacrifice). God provided them with the skin of an animal (first blood sacrifice). When man provides, it is never perfect; when God provides, it is always perfect.
- The roots of Destructive habits, financial lack & sickness are stress and fear. However, the deepest root is condemnation.
- Grace cannot flow when’s there condemnation and self-righteousness.
Galatians 3:12
- God only wants us to speak and believe. When he saw the darkness, he didn’t say it was too dark but instead he spoke the light and there was no corresponding action.
Mark 11:21-23
- God cursed the fig tree and it was sterile and didn’t want people to be deceived. Fig leaves represents self-righteousness.
- We must curse the fig leaves (self-righteousness) before faith can operate.
- Doubt: diakrino - Make a difference
- God is telling us don’t make a difference between speaking to the fig tree or the mountain.
- In God’s economy, the bigger the problem the easier. It took 5 loaves and 2 fishes to feed 5000 but it only took 4 loaves to feed 7000.
Romans 14:22-23
- Condemn: krino - fear and self-righteousness. Base word for diakrino (doubts).
- When we are sinners, we didn’t have to believe for sickness and bad situations, but it came as we were sinners. When we are righteous, we only have to believe for good and it will happen.
- As long as the burnt offering is going up, blessings come down. When Israel swopped God for idols, the blessings stopped.

Cyrus was called by name by the LORD before he was born, called by the prophet of Israel.
Israel returned to ashes. Temple razed to ground. They build the foundation to the temple.
The bible teaches us how to build our foundations. God doesn’t see church A, B, C but sees church as one. God sees us as body of Christ. Everything happening today is for Jesus and in prep for him
Church is central. Not biz first and church on the side on Sundays.
Everything about the church and about God’s chosen Israel.
Make sure your business is tied in with the church.
For some reason, God saw fit to choose this dot called SG, then to choose this smaller dot NCC & the tiniest dot, Joseph Prince, to touch the world for Jesus.
We don’t deserve this place. Unmerited favour.
2y after they came back, recalled the reason why they were rebuilding the Temple.
Ezra 3:8
Zerubbabel mentioned in genealogy of Christ. Kingly line/ leadership.
Joshua type of Christ.
Both together = King priest. Pic of Jesus.
No power to cleanse. Can only examine.
Jesus has kingly authority to speak.
Mary’s line goes back to Nathan. Joseph’s line goes back to Solomon. Jesus had double claim to be a King.
This king used his power to bless all of us.
Z&J = leadership of the land.
Started work. Building house of God, the devil won’t leave u alone. See v4- discouragement.
When u do things for his glory, there will always be opposition. Opposition tells u that u are doing something great and powerful. Although dislike opposition, be thankful you aren’t being ignored.
Times have not changed presence of opposition- social media today, professional counsellors then. But the problem isn’t the opposition. We like to complain it is the govt’s fault but know that SG is a great place to grow a family. No religious persecution here. We aren’t perfect but avoid murmuring, everyone has their own opinion… don’t be self-righteous.
The work of building stopped for 12 yrs. God didn’t ask the building to stop. We don’t hear about Z & J as the work was halted.
At the end of 12y, Haggai and Zechariah were raised. Contemporaries of Ezra. V young prophets. Haggai was young, Zechariah younger still- Zechariah was a teenager! Indicative of the Benjamin Generation. :) It has nothing to do with age.
Haggai went up to them and asked them, hey guys! Is this the time to live under a sealed roof (no longer living in tents) when the temple only had foundation? Drink but not quenched, eat but not full. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added into you.
Zech 3:1-5
Joshua standing before the Angel of the LORD and the devil (the one who accuses) opposing him. Joshua not mentioned because working behind the scenes. As the leader goes so goes the people. The leadership was under condemnation. Evidenced by filthy robes. Grace stops w condemnation.
Lepers were healed. Sick were healed. But the self-righteous couldn’t receive miracles. Pharisees- Christ was of no effect to them. Self-righteous people self-condemn. Those who self-condemn condemn others. Those who love best, are loved best.
Self-righteous life swings from a high to a low and focused on self. Not on Christ.
When look at Jesus, healing takes place. So lovely. If He is our salvation, it behooves us to see Jesus in the scripture to know what we have in Him.
Opposition succeeds and favour and grace stops w condemnation.
V4- See this Joshua, I have removed this iniquity from u… Clothed u with rich robes (robes of righteousness).
Until you know clearly your sins are forgiven, u won’t be empowered to love right. Grace is the power to true holiness.
Zerubbabel- in Zech 4:4-7
Angel about to show Zech about Zerubbabel. Not by might (financial might). Miracle seed Sunday largest offering on a whole- there wasn’t any $1m offering. It was the total giving of the whole church. Not by financial might. Not by our human smarts. It is by His spirit. Unmerited favour= things fall into place.
V7 Capstone - GRACE»> this is how mountains fall and become a plain. We about GRACE to it. About grace grace to our problems. We expect to be healed not because we do this or that but because of what Jesus finished work has done. Sometimes no time to pray a long prayer, just shout the name of Christ.
"LORD, grace grace." » Ps Jo Purcell prayed this short prayer when he had no time to pray a long one for a situation. The prayer was answered.
When they saw grace, the provision from the king was given, favour influence and grace flowed. Entires building finished in that same year.
Ezra 6:14
Prospered through the prophesying of H & Z
We prosper from the prophesying of the Word of God over us
Tithe is not for all. It comes w the revelation of God’s blessing and favour. Not about church needing your money
Sick? In lack? Down? Listen your way out of it by listening to the message of Grace!!
JESUS! He is altogether lovely!
Why self-righteousness is the most heinous sin—- because We are nothing but make ourselves something whilst Jesus was everything but made himself nothing.
Find rest in His righteousness. Rest of conscience. Rest of God.
Jesus, be my righteousness for I have none of my own.
Heavenly Father,
I believe u love me. And u saw me in my sins and u cared for me although I didn’t care a out my own life. I was lost and blind. Yet u send Jesus to die on cross for me so my sins are washed white as snow. Jesus is my righteousness and u raised him from the dead, so I am now greatly blessed, highly favoured and deeply loved.
