Renewing your mentality! (7/12/08 sermon notes) - Pastor Prince

Ephesians 4:21-25

21 I'm sure you heard of him. I'm sure you were taught by him. What you learned was the truth about Jesus.

22 You were taught not to live the way you used to. You must get rid of your old way of life. That's because it is polluted by longing for things that lead you down the wrong path.

23 You were taught to be made new in your thinking. 24 You were taught to start living a new life. It is created to be truly good and holy, just as God is.

25 So each of you must get rid of your lying. Speak the truth to your neighbor. We are all parts of one body.

- Thus, we need to put forth former conduct of old man because NOW we are new creations in Christ, new men. How do we do this? By being renewed in the Spirit of your mind.

True Holiness is something within.

When we are born again, we are righteous and holy.

We need to start believing we are new men not old men.

Religion tells you to become (ie Performance) but this is NOT the gospel message.

When you are in a relationship with Christ you HAVE become. Now walk oout what you already are.

God wants to defeat the wrong mentality in our life.

1 Sam 17:1-3

1 The Philistines gathered their army together for war. They came to Socoh in Judah. They set up camp at Ephes Dammim. It was between Socoh and Azekah. 2 Saul and the army of Israel gathered together. They camped in the Valley of Elah. They lined up their men to fight against the Philistines. 3 The Philistine army was camped on one hill. Israel's army was on another. The valley was between them.

Ephes Dammim --> In Hebrew, Ephes means boundary, Dammim is the plural of the word blood (eg Adam - means blood man)

Blood of Christ = the boundary that the devil can't cross over and praise God it surrounds us!

Since he can't cross over this boundary, the devil uses Goliaths or 'weapons' to try to take us out of this boundary or bloodline. Thus we need to defeat our Goliaths.

The Goliath Mentality is a web of deceit. Its aim is to get us to cross over from our place of victory to the place of defeat. It makes us come down from the higher place.

Goliath is from Gath - there is symbolic meaning in this.

Goliath = stripped, exile. A picture of a defeated enemy.

Gath = winepress. Picture of the wrath of God that is reserved from the devil and his minions.

So "Goliath from Gath" tells us that this giant is already stripped because of the wrath of God!!!

But Goliath will come to make you feel naked and stripped instead. He will cause you to forget that you have on the robe of righteousness. He wants to accuse you of being unloved, unprotected and naked. This is beccause in doing so he can take you captive and make youf eel that you are under the wrath of God, stripped and exiled from God's presence (ie. condemnation).

This is judgement metality and is the opposite of the rainbow mentality that God wants us to have. Rainbow mentality is knowing that because of Christ's finished work on the cross, God will never be angry with you again!

God who sent His son, thought up of salvation lan, loved you first before you loved Him... This God is love personified!!! HE IS LOVE!

The word "Philistine" is "Pah Lash" in Hebrew. It means to wallow or roll in the dust.

The Spirit of Condemnation is a dusty spirit. It makes you feel dirty.

When Job expressed grief, he put on sackcloth and dust on his head.

(Interesting to nite - the Chinese also put on sack cloth when they mourn.)

During creation, we see how mn is created from dust and how the Spirit breath life into man. But because we have fallen, people remember that they come from dust (the humbling aspect of creation) yet have forgotten how the Spirit breathed life into them (the majestic and glorious aspect of creation). - Dust consciousness?

Dust is the food of the devil.

It is important to note that if we dirty or sin conscious (as opposed to Christ conscious) after reading or listening to a sermon, it is either that we have wrongly interpreted the sermon or that we have just heard "Goliath" teaching.

We are asked to walk the way of the cross. When the people of God left Egypt to head to Israel, they crossed both the Red Sea and Jordan River. This is symbolical of the way of the cross- it carries meaning. The Red Sea symbolises how Christ died for us. The Jordan River symbolises that we have died to the world in Christ and risen to new life in Him!

What this means is that we must remember that ALL our blessings must come through the cross, not self-effort. All we can do is thank and receive.

Christianity is a life of receiving from the start to the end.

Good receivers are good servers and good achievers.

Therefore REST and TRUST in Christ to receive from the Cross!

The spirit of Philistines tries to get us to DIY, holds us bondage to legalism, tells us that karma (do good get good, do bad get bad) is real... what this really does is to make us by-pass the Cross and cause people to focus on self instead of Christ!

We should be occupied with Christ and beholding Him. In doing so we will transform from glory to glory as we behold Him!

Goliath wore bronze around his head (helmet of bronze). Bronze symbolises "judgement". So Goliath wore a helmet of judegement (vs how Christ is depicted in Revelation to have a face that shone like the sun and wore a rainbow around His head - mercy, forgivness.)

As Christians we must see people through the cross, not through the bronze.
It is not our place to judge. Only Christ can judge.

(eg. Bronze Altar in the OT = picture of the cross. )

Goliath wore also a coatof mail that was made of scales of bronze.
This depicts that he has a heart helmed in by a strong judgement mentality. He does not have a heart for people.

We show a similar spirit if we choose to judge people or to be cold and not express our love to our family in words and actions.

Goliath also wore bronze armour over his leg. This shows how he stands upon judgement.

(self note- He carried a bronze javelin. Does this depict how the devil throws judgement as his weapon at people to hurt and wound them?)

1 Sam 17:17-19

17 Jesse said to his son David, "Get at least half a bushel of grain that has been cooked. Also get ten loaves of bread. Take all of it to your brothers. Hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten chunks of cheese to the commander of their company. Find out how your brothers are doing. Bring me back some word about them. 19 They are with Saul and all of the men of Israel. They are in the Valley of Elah. They are fighting against the Philistines."

10 is representative of the whole.

David is a picture of the Heavenly Father sending His Son, a Shepherd and ALL that He has, to the battlefield for us.

26Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

It is good to note that David was concerned not concerned by how Goliath is threatening the people, but that Goliath in his threats is robbing Israel of reproach and is out to defy the armies of Israel.

The word "defy" is "keereph" in Hebrew.

The word "reproach" is "kherpah" in Hebrew.

They have the same root word!

Thus, we see how the whole story of David vs Goliath is about how Devil uses the word of reproach resting upon conditions of shame and disgrace to hold us in his stronghold or bondage.

We must know and remember that this has already been dealth with by Christ on the cross.

The devil is out to cause us to be held ame!
bondage by guilt, condemnation and power addiction. These cause distance between us and God. Being held in bondage to these will guarantee at causing us to repeat these mistakes.

Remember we are no longer under that shame!

Psalm 69:20,21

20 Reproach has broken my heart,
And I am full of heaviness;
I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none;
And for comforters, but I found none.
21 They also gave me gall for my food,
And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Psalm 69 is a Messianic Psalm. The word reproach here is originally "keerpah" in Hebrew.

The word of "heaviness" is "nuwsh" in Hebrew. It means to be ill or heart sick, distressed. Christ broke His heart so that our heart will not be broken. He bore the reproach for us!!

1 Samuel 17:28

Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”

It is one thing for the devil to reproach you but it feels worse when it is your "ga gi nang" (mate, family, friend, dear one) who reproaches you.

In verse 30, David shows us the RIGHT RESPONSE to such reproach -

30 Then he turned from him toward another and said the same thing; and these people answered him as the first ones did.

We should let God be our defense instead of wasting time explaining and arguing.

What Eliab interpreted as pride was actually David's faith in God - true humily because he has a better opinion of God and understands the covenants.

Joshua 5:9

Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.

Gilgal means roll away. What was being rolled away? The reproach of Egypt that had been heaped upon the people for 40 years. Although the people had been brought out of Egypt, Egypt was still in them.

During the circumcision that took place at Gilgal what happened was that the Israelites had to be re-circumcised so that they could be weak and in their weakness, God would be able to be strong for them.

1 Samuel 17:38

Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head.

We see here Saul placing a bronze armour on David. It is important to remember that we cannot fight judgement with judgemeent.

David refused to be clad in this armour and instead he retained his Shepherd clothes and sling, took his Shepherd staff in hand and carried 5 smooth stones.
- In short, David went as a SHEPHERD! (Picture of our LORD Jesus Christ)

The 5 smooth stones = 5-fold ministry.

The stones that he picked up was from a brook and they were made smooth by running water rubbing on them.

Smoothened so that it can hit the mark on judgement mentality - judge the judgement and kill it in Christ.

Make sure judgement mentality is judged right at the root!! Make it bow down in defeat and homage to God.

Judge mentality = wrong teaching.

Goliath has the number of 6 all over him. This shows that Goliath represents the spirit of antichrist.

Spirit of Antichrist = negates Christ & pushes aside the finished work of Christ.

1 Samuel 17:52

52 Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.

Ekron - means uprooted. (Sense of being uprooted - righteous until the next sin pops up. Fear that can lose salvation.)

Gath - means winepress (Devil impersonating God, imitating the "King's wrath like a roaring lion" with the "devil prowling like a roaring lion")

Shaaraim road - double gates

Thank GOD the gates of Hell cannot prevail! =D

David met the challenge not with judgement mentality but with grace-filled mentality =)

Death = weapon of Devil

Jesus used the devil's weapon against him. =)

Through death, Christ conquered him who has power in death.

Similarly, David decapitated Goliath with his own sword.

Furthermore, David brought the skull of Goliath to Jerusalem, to Golgotha.

This is symbolical and important - this was where Christ was crucified.

The GREATER SON OF DAVID has conquered the GREATER GOLIATH! =D

This therefore fulfils the promise of God - Adam & Eve's seed will crush the serpent's head!!!

Praise God!
